Studies show that the very presence of a dog in an educational environment
tends to improve concentration, attention, relaxation and motivation. This
helps to reduce stress levels that would otherwise affect learning.
Interacting with animals has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress
related hormone) and lower blood pressure. Other studies have found that
animals can reduce loneliness, teach empathy and help develop social skills to
enable them to pick up signs imperative to human relationships.
Interacting with a therapy dog can lead to an increase in the feel-good
hormone oxytocin (a hormone associated with bonding and attachment). This
can be especially helpful for individuals who are suffering from depression,
anxiety or other mental health conditions.
Bringing dogs into the workplace can increase social interaction amongst
colleagues, leading to a more positive and collaborative workplace culture.
They can boost morale and generally help with staff wellbeing.
